The Medici Makers of Modern Art
The Medici: Makers of Modern Art. A Renaissance Documentary in which Andrew Graham-Dixon reveals how the Medici family transformed Florence through sculpture, painting and architecture and created a world where masterpieces fetch millions today.
Without the money and patronage of the Medici we might never have heard of artists such as Donatello, Michelangelo or Botticelli. Graham-Dixon examines how a family of shadowy, corrupt businessmen, driven by greed and ambition, became the financial engine behind the Italian Renaissance.

    Banking houses
The map shows the locations of the two leading Italian trading and banking houses of the 14th and 15th centuries. Branches of the Peruzzi bank around 1336 are shown in red, branches of the Medici bank about 100 years later in yellow. Both had their headquarters, indicated by a black frame, in Florence.

Questions in the course booklet relating to the image of Florence in 1400 and the map of European trade routes in the 15th century.
Answer these questions in complete sentences and use your knowledge of how to interrogate sources to give thorough answers showing a good level of critical thinking.

    1) Look at the image of Florence in 1400. What are the largest buildings in the city? (Think about what was important in the life of a city during the Renaissance with regard to religion, government, trade/commerce, wealth, leisure, defence and protection).

    2) If people wanted to use the image of the painting of Florence from 1400 as a record of what Florence was really like then, how accurate do you think it would be and why? Give reasons for your answer.

    3) how might historians test the accuracy of the image to find this out?

    4) Comment on three important things about city life which this source does not show.

    5) What different kinds of sources could you use to find out about these things? Give reasons for your answer.

    6) Study the trade map. What are the main trade routes linking the city of Florence with other parts of Europe?

    7) Give four reasons why the geographical situation of Florence helped it to become a great city.

    8) Explain the link between English wool, Roman alum and the rich cloth industry of Florence. (You may need to research in brief about the English wool trade at this time and its links with Florence. You will probably need to look up the word alum and find out what this was used for. Italy was known for its bright colour cloth which was sold throughout Europe and beyond).

    9) List the cities outside Florence in which the Medici banking family had branches of their bank. Why do you think the Medici chose these cities to open up branches of the Medici bank?

    10) Why were the Medici also keen to get control of the alum supplies?
